Oil in my Lamp is a book of poems enriched by travel through the stunningly beautiful Caribbean with its share of poverty, homelessness, street children: by the nakedness of a bauxite-mining landscape in Jamaica; by experiencing sunrise and sunset in the Caribbean; by the toils of poverty-stricken women in India, mothers making ends meet, and by the allure and magnificence of the Taj Mahal, that icon of true love.

Men Often Marry Their Mothers

No serious study
Was done on this subject
But from observation
Over the years
I have come to the conclusion
That men marry their mothers
And women their fathers.

Have you noticed
That men with strong mothers
Are attracted to strong women
Those that love to be
In control of others
Is it because they need
The strong hand?

But those men
Whose fathers rule
Women with iron hands
Tend to find companions
Who accept such treatment
And stay and tolerate
The abusive relation.

Women with
Abusive fathers have a knack
For finding husbands
Who get much pleasure
From causing them to suffer
Is the reason genes
Or is it culture?
